Frequently asked questions about our school

 

How big is Westport Public School?

Approximately 370 students and about 30 staff.

 

What are the size of classes?

Kinder classes        -to a maximum of 20

Year 1 classes        -to a maximum of 23

Year 2 classes        -to a maximum of 25

Years 3-6 classes    -to a maximum of 30

Classes are generally smaller than this.

 

Are there any composite classes?

Yes, the school is organised into stages and all classes in Stage 2 and 3 are composites.  

 

What subjects does the school focus on?

All subjects are presented as directed by the NSW Board of Studies.  Within this the school's key focus area is literacy.

 

What support is there for children who are experiencing learning difficulties?

The school's Welfare/Learning Difficulties Support Committee coordinates the efforts of our school counsellor, reading recovery teacher, learning difficulties support teacher and a number of teacher aides. 

The school prides itself on meeting the needs of all students.

 

Does the school have a library?

Yes, one of the very best info technology libraries in all of NSW.   The library takes up all of the second story of H Block and includes a state of the art computer lab.  

 

Does the school have a canteen?

Yes, the school's canteen is open 5 days a week and is run by a canteen supervisor.   Voluntary mums and dads help with the running of the canteen.   The canteen has a Diamond Accreditation from the NSW Canteen Association.

 

Does the school have a hall?

Yes, the school has a fantastic hall which was designed and paid for by the local community.   School choirs and the band regularly use the hall.   Community groups also use our hall after school and on weekends.

 

Does the school have many demountables?

No, the school does not have any demountables.

 

Do children have access to computers?

Yes, the school has a computer lab and all classrooms have at least two computers connected to the school's network.   These computers are all connected to the internet and students can use the Internet for as long as they like, no time limits.

Technology is seen as an integral part of all Key learning areas and all classes are implementing the school's technology scope and sequence.

 

Does the school have a welfare policy?

Yes, the school has developed and implemented a very effective Discipline/ Welfare Policy, copies are available from the office.

 

Are Gifted and talented children catered for?

The school has a Year 4/6  and Kinder enrichment classes.  Students in Years 1-4 with special needs are identified and supported by class teachers.

 

What are the teachers like?

Fantastic!  A wonderful mix of long serving staff and new teachers to the school.   Merit Selection has enabled us to choose the very best staff from across the state.

 

Is bus travel available?

  Yes, bus travel is available from anywhere in Port Macquarie and most surrounding areas to Westport PS.   Free bus travel is available to Kinder, Year1 and Tear 2 students .  It is also available to Year 3-6 children who live more than 1.5km fromWPPS.

 

How much are school fees?

$22  per child to a maximum of $44 per family.

 

Are parents involved in the day to day running of the school?

Yes, parents are involved in the governance of the school through P&C and our very active School Council.   Large numbers of parents are involved, on a daily basis, by helping in class and in the running of special activities such as student banking, Uniform Shop and sport.

 

What is the schools' enrolment zone?

The schools' enrolment zone includes Westport, the North Shore and the Settlement Point area.  Westport is bounded by the Hastings River, the Pacific Highway, and Kooloonbung Creek.
